Join us for an evening hike on a circular route around the nearby tors. This route offers stunning views and a relaxed pace — perfect for winding down for the evening. This will be a human and dog adventure.

What to Bring:

• Water (for you and your dog)

• Weather appropriate clothing

• Head torch and/or torch

• Hiking boots or sturdy footwear

• Optional: snacks and mug for drinks

Important Information:

• Dartmoor weather can change quickly. Come prepared for all weather conditions just in case.

• We aim to be back at the car park before dark, but don’t forget to bring a torch just in case.

  Hazard | Who Might Be Harmed | Control Measures

  1. Uneven, steep, or slippery terrain

     Participants and dogs

     Participants advised to wear appropriate footwear. Route planned with regular check-ins and breaks.

  2. Poor visibility, fog, or getting lost

     Participants and dogs

     Map and compass navigation reinforced. Group leaders monitor progress. Participants must stay with the group unless cleared by leaders. Emergency contact info collected.

  3. Extreme or changeable weather (heat, cold, rain, wind)

     Participants and dogs

     Participants advised to bring weather-appropriate gear. Event may be shortened or cancelled in dangerous conditions. Organizers monitor forecast closely.

  4. Dehydration or heat-related illness

     Participants and dogs

     Everyone reminded to bring water. Breaks built into the route. Organizers carry extra water and monitor signs of overheating, especially in dogs.

  5. Hypothermia or cold exposure

     Participants and dogs

     Layers and waterproofs strongly encouraged. Shorter route option available if weather deteriorates.

  6. Dog aggression or fights

     Participants, dogs, and the public

     Dogs must remain on leads unless instructed otherwise. Participants are briefed beforehand. Organizers trained in canine first aid.

  7. Injury from fall, trip, or overexertion

     Participants and dogs

     Participants briefed on terrain risks. Leaders will carry phones for emergency contact. Participants encouraged to pace themselves. Minor first aid items to be carried individually.

  8. Medical emergencies (pre-existing conditions, allergic reactions, etc.)

     Participants

     Participants asked to disclose relevant info voluntarily. They are reminded to bring medications (e.g., inhalers, EpiPens). Emergency contacts collected.

  9. Livestock encounters or wildlife disturbance

     Participants, dogs, wildlife, and livestock

     Dogs kept on lead at all times near livestock. Participants briefed on wildlife awareness and respectful conduct.

  10. Dog fouling or litter

      Public, wildlife, environment

      Participants required to pick up after their dogs and dispose of waste properly. Leave No Trace principles encouraged.

  11. Lost participant or separation from group

      Participants and dogs

      Regular headcounts taken. Leaders use What3Words to assist with navigation. Mobile phones carried for contact. Group stays together unless permission granted.

  12. Fatigue or overexertion (human or dog)

      Participants and dogs

      Regular stops planned. Option to cut route short if necessary. Participants reminded this is not a race. Dogs monitored for signs of fatigue.

  13. Ticks or Insect Bites

      Participants and dogs

      Participants advised to check themselves and dogs after the walk. Insect repellent recommended. Dogs on parasite prevention treatment encouraged.

  14. Mobile Signal Issues (common on Dartmoor)

      Participants

      Leaders familiar with the area. Navigation done together.

  Emergency Procedures

  • In case of emergency, call 999.

  • Closest hospital: Derriford Hospital, Plymouth (PL6 8DH), which is about a 25 minute car journey.

  • Organizers will carry a first aid kit (human and dog) and have emergency contact info for all participants. Organizers are trained in human and canine first aid.

  • Group leader to coordinate emergency response and stay with affected person until help arrives.

  Review

  • This risk assessment will be reviewed at the start of the event and adjusted if necessary due to conditions on the day.
